Legislation update: Ohio marriage ban on hold, for now
by Susan Bader
According to an article in the June 21 Cleveland Plain Dealer, anti-gay State Sen. Gary Suhadolnik has decided not to introduce such a ban in the General Assembly, at least for now. Keep an eye open for any changes in this development and let us know if you see anything happen.
H.B. 89, Education Bill. I received a letter dated June 13 directly from Rep. Michael Wise and Rep. Jim Jordan telling me that "Now is the crucial time to contact your state senator to voice your support for this bill's passage."
We cannot let them get away with this during the summer. We need to write once again to our state senators and tell them not to support H.B. 89. This bill will keep needed information on human sexuality education from children and it will interfere with teachers' ability to present information to their students. Tell the senators that
there is nothing wrong

with the current law dealing with sex education and the open records law applying to
H.B. 257, Hate Crimes Law. A special thanks goes to everyone who worked on returning postcards and petitions on this bill, which would add gays and lesbians to the existing law incresing penalties for hate crimes. Two days after the Columbus Stonewall March and Rally, I delivered over 500 postcards to Ohio state representives. Rep. Otto Beatty, the bill sponsor, was also very thankful for your special effort.
This bill is currently going through another revision. Rep. Beatty is amending the bill to increase the penalty of arsonists burning churches. If you would like a copy of this amended bill, contact Rep. Beatty at 614-466-5343. Rep. Beatty will be trying to add his bill as an amendment to another bill being brought to the House floor at their September session. So keep those postcards and letters going to your Ohio Representative, asking them to support H.B. 257.
